Soma Wolverine Build
This year Soma came out with a super cool all-rounder called the Wolverine. It is still made out of heat-treated Tange Prestige that but with a few features that we don’t see very often that add to the awesome versatility of this bike. They went ahead and put some s-bend stays on to give you some truly massive tire clearance and also split the right SS to allow you to run belt drive if you were so inclined. The frame is finished with some stainless slider D.O.’s from Tange, allowing for not only added tire clearance but it can essentially lengthen the wheelbase from a CX frame right out to a bike ready to have a tour on.
We built this one up to do a little bit of everything from all day excursions to a fast commute and maybe even some weekend tours thrown in for good measure. The 38mm Panaracer tires make this bike super plush and faster than you would expect from such a voluminous tire. Nearly the whole groupset is Shimano Deore 10 speed with the exception of the CX-50 crankset and front derailleur to give you a 20 speed drivetrain with a low enough gear that this bike could take some serious weight up our hills. The brakes on this build are a system that is pretty new to the market as well as new to us, they are a dual piston cable pull disc brake from TRP. Not only do they have a bit more power than their competitors, but they also have better modulation and are easier to adjust.
